Why You Mustn’t Overlook Google +

When Google launched their social network  a year ago today, we were super excited at dotDigital – they’d either boom, or fall flat on their faces, we thought. But instead, they’ve chugged along, adding a few features, going mobile and bleating about its ‘success’.

Unfortunately for Google, we all know that Google +, for now is just another social network – more noise. Unfortunately for us, Google’s web omnipotence and social’s importance to search, mean that Google are unlikely to drop this one.

I expect they’ll almost force everyone left who hasn’t signed up, onto G + by integrating it further with its most popular services. Then, once we’re all there – not just the geeks but like, your mum (if she knows it or not) – they’ll do something awesome that’s only available on G +, as well as continuing to drip-feed and link more G+ integration into other services.

So as a marketer, it’s a chance to get traction on a platform that almost certainly will get bigger. The link to SEO means that you could benefit in ranking terms if +1’s or followers become a ranking factor.

So – beyond just being on G +, integrating the G + buttons onto your site, and monitoring your brand mentions there – you need to actually be sharing content if you want impressions in your followers’ news feeds. So we’re making it easy for you at dotdigital.
