Why we no longer support Internet Explorer 7

Here at dotdigital it’s our mission to create the fastest, easiest-to-use enterprise level email platform there is.

To do this, we make use of new capabilities available in modern browsers.

We do, however, appreciate that most of you are using dotdigital’s Engagement Cloud in a work environment and may not have control over what browsers are, and are not, installed on your computer. So you don’t have to have the latest tech to use dotdigital’s Engagement Cloud, we test the platform to make sure it works in a number of older web browsers.

However, as of 1 January 2014 dotdigital’s Engagement Cloud will no longer be supported in Internet Explorer 7 (IE7); this has been a long time coming (too long if you ask some of our front-end developers!), but for those of you clinging on to this old browser, it may be time to upgrade to the latest version.

Why has it taken so long to discontinue support for IE7?

Internet Explorer 7’s first stable release was back in April 2009; it was then superseded by IE8 in February 2011 and since then by IE9, IE10 and recently IE11.

As it’s free to get a newer version of Internet Explorer, most users have upgraded since then. Worldwide IE7 accounts for just 0.6% of browser usage (Source: W3Schools); Engagement Cloud users have been lagging behind a little and have only just fallen below 1.0% (by September this year 0.96% of Engagement Cloud users visited using IE7). Google dropped support for IE7 over two years ago, and Facebook’s timelines don’t display at all in the browser.

Supporting older browsers means that software development takes longer, and it limits the new features we can release. But some of our customers (particularly those working in the finance sector) have to jump through a lot of hoops to get their browsers upgraded. While other global brands have dropped support, or even taken to charging an IE7 tax, we’ve been continuing to support it well past its natural life.

Now we’ve dropped below the magic 1.0% line, we’re freeing ourselves from the shackles of this older technology to create more time to bring you even better email marketing tools.

If I use IE7 will dotdigital’s Engagement Cloud just stop working?

dotdigital’s Engagement Cloud will, almost certainly, continue to work in IE7 for some time – even our soon to be released drag-and-drop lifecycle marketing tool works in IE6 and IE7. Our officially not supporting it just means that if we release a new feature, or make a change to the platform, we will no longer guarantee that it will work in the older browser.

Our new lifecycle marketing automation tool allows users to arrange their marketing program in a flowchart view; this takes advantage of capabilities of modern browsers.

Critical contact-facing pages (such as the unsubscribe page) will continue to be supported in IE7.

For guaranteed support for all our features, upgrade to a more up-to-date version of Internet Explorer.

Or, if you prefer, download and install one of our other supported browsers such as Chrome or Firefox.  You can find an up-to-date list of our supported browsers in the dotdigital knowledge base.
