Using WordPress As A Cost Effective CMS

Here at the dotdigital Group, we’ve been building content managed websites for over 11 years. In that time, we have continually refined and developed our own Content Management System, dotEditor, and the result is a powerful platform that can be easily extended to suit any need.

All of our web projects that use dotEditor are built from the ground up, which gives us the flexibility to create completely bespoke websites and applications for our clients.

However, bespoke generally equals money! And, with our base dotEditor licence starting at £995 before the design and build fees, what can we offer you if you have a smaller budget?

The answer is lots!

We can now offer integrations with a range of other content management systems, including WordPress.

WordPress is great for getting sites built quickly and cost effectively, based on the thousands of “themes” and “plugins” that have already been created by the WordPress community.

Slingshot Sponsorship

As our resident ‘Wordpress expert’, I wanted to share some insight into a recent site we built using WordPress for new sponsorship management and consulting agency, Slingshot Sponsorship.

WordPress is the core content management system that runs the site. This makes it very easy for Slingshot Sponsorship to update all content, as well as developing bespoke visuals and maintaining overall usability.

The site connects with Twitter to provide quick access for visitors, and also features a real-time news feed. The site is also tied into Google Analytics so that Slingshot Sponsorship can track all traffic and note trends in site usage.

One of the key challenges was to make this site (bearing in mind that WordPress is first and foremost a blog CMS platform) look and feel more like a news and information-based site. The system is flexible enough to allow changes to content, layout, style and overall visitor usage, which in turn make this a cost effective approach to web development.

Jackie Fast, MD at Slingshot Sponsorship, is delighted with the final result: “It’s amazing how the site still looks really fresh and modern, despite using WordPress as the back-end. It’s packed with all the features and functionality we need, while being easy to manage and update. For the time being, while we consider the possibility of investing in a bespoke solution, the WordPress CMS more than suits our needs.”

So if you’re thinking about a site refresh, but don’t have the budget for a bespoke CMS, give us a shout and we’d be happy to see if there is a more cost-effective option out there for you.
